(24 Jul 1999) Japanese/Nat Launderettes have been cleaning clothes for years but a new item might be about to enter the wash cycle. A Japanese firm has invented the human washing machine for people who are unable or unwilling to wash their own bodies. The machine, first used in health centres, is now appearing in beauty salons throughout the country. Tired of whipping up your own soapy lather whilst standing in the shower? If so, the Japanese firm, Aluvo, may have the answer. A new way to shower which takes the scrub out of the bath tub by doing all the work for you. The shower is designed primarily for elderly people unable to reach those hard to get to parts of the body. Clients are wheeled into the machine and locked in place to enjoy a thorough shower without having to move a muscle. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) "It feels extremely relaxing. It's different from normal shower water. When the water touches my skin, it feels so good." SUPER CAPTION: Lady customer, Voxpop Specially designed jet sprays fill the tank, making clients feel like they are taking a bath as opposed to a shower. Company designers thought up the idea to create a more sanitary environment for senior citizens to wash in. Traditionally, many Japanese have washed together in public baths. Unfortunately the continuing popularity of these places means the older generation find it hard to clean themselves in comfort. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) "As you know, with a normal shower, the water comes out like strings. We developed a special technique that cuts the shower water into 300 micron size drops. This is the secret of the comfort provided by our product." SUPER CAPTION: Eri Kitamura, Aluvo spokeswoman It appears the cost of clean living does not come cheap. To experience a special shower in the comfort of your home would cost 47-thousand U- S dollars - cleaning up your bank balance as well as your body. Until recently the market for these human washing machines was health care centres and medical clinics. The company says they are now receiving numerous demands from beauty salons because the device is so relaxing and comfortable.
