As of May 7, 2025, everyone must have a Real ID to fly within the U.S. or enter federal buildings, such as courthouses, post offices, the Social Security Administration, and municipal buildings. How do I know I have a Real ID? The ID cards look similar, but a Real ID is marked with a star, while non-compliant cards are marked with "Not for Federal Purpose." Each state’s Real ID looks slightly different. To know if you have a Real ID in Wisconsin, check if there is a star in the top right corner of your ID or driver’s license. Vocabulary Proof: Something that shows something is true. Identity: Information that makes you who you are, like your name, photo, and birthday. Cost: The price you pay for something. Getting a Real ID To get a Real ID, you must go to the DMV in person; you cannot complete the process online. You will need to bring several additional documents to the DMV. However, you can use the DMV’s website to start the process and fill out the necessary forms. Documentation You Need Proof of Name and Date of Birth Proof of Legal Presence in the U.S. Proof of Identity Proof of Name Change (if your name is different from what’s on your birth certificate, you’ll need proof for each name change) Proof of Address (two forms that show your current Wisconsin address) How Much Does it Cost? Getting a Real ID costs the same as getting or renewing a regular driver’s license. The cost is $34 for a Real ID, and a regular photo ID costs $28. If your current ID does not expire before 2025 and you want to get a Real ID before that time, you will need to pay the cost of a duplicate card, which is $14.
