Per ASME B20.1 - Safety Standard for Conveyors & Related Equipment: Vertical reciprocating conveyors, or VRCs, are vertical conveyors designed to move materials only, not people, from one level to another. ASME B20.1 requires that VRCs are guarded at each level by an enclosure system such as solid or wire partitions that include interlocked gates. These enclosures prevent personnel or equipment from entering the lift area during operation or when the platform is not present. When engaged, interlocked gates prohibit people from falling into an open shaft or in the way of a moving VRC platform. Using wire mesh partitions with safety interlocks restricts access for personnel and moving equipment during operation while providing visual of the materials, leading to a safe and secure work environment. Safety gates, such as vertical acting, sliding, single swing, and bi-parting swing gates, provide easy access to the carriage. They provide maximum protection for enclosures using a required electro-mechanical interlock. These interlocks prevent gates from opening when the carriage platform is not present and restricts lift operation if any gate is not closed and interlocked. These systems are often located near high traffic mobile aisles in industrial facilities. Integrating bollards or guardrails can protect the enclosure from unwanted and costly damage by mobile equipment.
