Written in 1971 by the incomparable Michel Legrand for the eponymous movie, this theme song captured all the emotion within the story line of a teenage boy’s love for a young woman, whose husband was off fighting in WWII. It's also know as "The Summer Knows" mostly when sung with the lyrics. As an arranger myself, I can't express how perfectly this chart is written by Jay. I never tire of it. The Jay Owen Orchestra, with which I was blessed to be a part as bassist and contributing arranger for many years, was comprised of some of the NYC area’s best musicians. Richie’s Alto Sax is haunting in both his working of the melody and his adept ad libbing around the melody without losing the sole of the music. Jay’s arrangement is exquisite, as is most of his work. Ron Parker’s guitar work with “harmonics” adds so much to the over warm and subtleties of this ballad. Sadly, more than half this Nonet have passed on to the band in heaven.
