Health ministry presses on with malaria prevention following 11 deaths

By: Selma Taapopi The health ministry is continuing to carry out malaria prevention measures to curb the spread of mosquitos amongst others, routine indoor residual spraying in communities that are most at risk. This is in response to the 11 deaths, 604 admitted patients and 8 760 malaria cases recorded as of 25 January 2026. The recorded cases mark a sharp 68 percent increase compared to the 5229 cases reported during the same period in 2025. The ministry’s control public relations officer, Walters Kamaya, said at least 20 health districts have exceeded the epidemic threshold and are experiencing outbreaks. Affected health districts include Eenhana, Engela and Okongo, amongst others.
