Performed at Ovation Sound, Winston-Salem, NC on Friday, February 16th, 2018 by: Attacca Quartet Amy Schroeder - violin Keiko Tokunaga - violin Nathan Schram - viola Andrew Yee - cello Presented by: UNC School of the Arts M. Lindsay Bierman, Chancellor School of Music Brian Cole, Dean AND Archive Live (a concert series at Ovation Sound combining the hi fidelity and control factors of a recording session with the energy and vibe of an intimate live concert) III Lenoir - William Stevens Composer’s Note: This suite for string quartet was written for my mother for her 85th birthday in 2007 and revised for this performance. The subject of each movement is a small town in western North Carolina which is important to Mom. I used a hymn tune in the first movement and liked the way it worked, so I decided to incorporate a hymn into each of the movements. Lenoir is where I was born and grew up. This movement is not about the town, but about my family. The music is in 6/8 since there were six of us children, and each sibling gets a musical theme. The hymn tune is TALLIS’ CANON by Thomas Tallis (ca. 1567), not for any reason except that when I was writing this movement it popped into my head. Audio recorded and mixed by Bill Stevens at Ovation Sound Video captured by Jacqui Haggerty and Jonathan Pfundstein. Video edited by Bill Stevens at Ovation Sound Archive Live Tag written by Bill Stevens and Evan Richey, performed by Nick Baglio, Daniel Seriff, Becca Stevens, Bill Stevens, Laura Stevens, and the Ovation Sound String Ensemble (Evan Richey, and Jacqui Carrasco)
