Want to become a better photographer? In this video, I share the 5 simple rules that took me from amateur to professional. These aren't gear reviews or camera settings tutorials. This is about the mindset shifts that actually matter. After 20 years shooting professional sports, portraits, and wildlife, these are the honest truths I wish someone had told me when I started. CHAPTERS 0:00 - Intro: Stop Taking Photos Like It's 1999 0:31 - Rule #1: Your First Shot Is Never Your Only Shot 1:37 - Rule #2: Be Your Own Toughest Critic 2:38 - Rule #3: See What Others Miss 3:35 - Rule #4: Let Your Photos Speak for Themselves 4:21 - Rule #5: Remember Why You Started 5:27 - Your Challenge & Outro Rule #1: Your First Shot Is Never Your Only Shot Your memory card is a gold mine, not a photo album. In one soccer match, I shoot over 8,000 frames and keep less than 80. Film cost money. Digital is free. Use burst mode and create the chance for the perfect shot to happen. Rule #2: Be Your Own Toughest Critic Never show your bad photos. One blurry image makes your ten best shots look worse. Famous photographers have thousands of average shots too, you just never see them. Show only your absolute best. Rule #3: See What Others Miss You are an artist, not a security camera. Learn to see beauty everywhere. A dirty railway becomes leading lines. A foggy day becomes a dreamy landscape. Show people how YOU see the world. Rule #4: Let Your Photos Speak for Themselves Stop putting watermarks across your images. A great photo is art. You don't see a painter's signature across the middle of a canvas. Add your copyright to the metadata and let the feeling hit the viewer first. Rule #5: Remember Why You Started It has to be fun. I shoot thousands of frames because I love the hunt for that perfect moment. If you're not enjoying the process, it shows in your pictures. Shoot what you love, kids, birds, streets, landscapes, and let that joy fuel your growth. 🎯 YOUR CHALLENGE Go shoot 100 frames of something you love. Cut them down to the single best image. Share only that one. Practice being a tough editor and let me know in the comments if it changed how you see your photos. 💬 QUESTIONS Need help with: How to cull photos fast?
