The tale of when Lt. Bruce W. Carr, USAAF, supposedly was shot down and stole a German Fw 190A fighter plane to fly back to his base is a popular one. It even inspired the recent Hollywood film "Top Gun: Maverick".... Too bad it's an urban myth. The real story, however, is funny and, well, let’s just say that “boys will be boys” – even in wartime. It wasn't exactly Lt. Carr's finest hour.... NOTE: Another pilot's great escape, that of Bob Hoover, who actually did steal a German plane and fly back home just a couple of weeks before the war ended, is not as often told. There are dozens of articles about Lt. Carr's flight online as well. It's hard not to believe -- it's a bit like the alligators you can find in New York City's sewers. ***PROOF: Conclusive evidence that the story is false is found in Steve Blake's extensively researched, day-by-day account of the 354th FG's history, "The Pioneer Mustang Group / The 354th Fighter Group in World War II", which is considered the penultimate reference source about the unit. See page 345, where Blake confirms the version I relate in my video -- that the events happened after the war at Ansbach. Blake writes: "Another Lt. Salter's squadron mates, Bruce Carr, who, besides being a triple ace, was one of the group's genuine 'characters,' also had an unfortunate experience while flying an Fw 190. For many years an apocryphal tale, its source unclear but usually presented as the gospel truth, has circulated about Carr. According to the account, which has been published more than once, he was shot down over Austria in late April 1945, evaded capture for several days, and then stumbled upon a Luftwaffe airfield from which he was able to steal an Fw 190 that he flew back to Ansbach, where he crash-landed it. A great story, but most of it is untrue. / In fact Captain Carr, who had helped liberate some of the aforementioned cars and motorcycles, was one of the wannabe collectors of German fighters. He heard that there was a trove of them at Linz (indeed in Austria) and proposed that and his squadron mates collect some. Shortly after VE Day he proceeded to hitchhike there, having planned a rendezvous over the airfield with some of the other pilots. Carr chose an Fw 190 that seemed to be in good condition, made sure it had sufficient fuel, took off, joined up with his friends flying the P-51s, and flew to Ansbach. He did, in fact, crash-land it there, for the reason given in the mostly fictitious story: although he had managed to retract the landing gear, he was unable to figure out how to get it down again."
