Rising Ganga and Yamuna trigger flood crisis in Varanasi, Prayagraj, families forced to evacuate

Continuous rain over the past week has raised the water levels of the Ganga and Yamuna, triggering flood threats in Prayagraj, where the two rivers meet, and in Varanasi, where the Ganga flows. Both rivers have crossed their warning marks due to heavy rainfall in upstream regions and the release of water from barrages. In Varanasi, low lying areas are waterlogged with residents forced to wade through knee-deep water, carrying their belongings as they move towards higher ground. In Prayagraj too water from the rising rivers has submerged streets, ghats, and homes in several low-lying areas. Residents say the situation is worsening by the day. With frequent power cuts, poor sanitation, and the risk of diseases adding to their problems. While residents in both cities believed the worse was over just a week ago, they now realise that they had heaved a sigh of relief too soon.
