The list of changes to the new electric Audi S6 Sportback e-tron versus its more pedestrian A6 e-tron counterpart is a long one. First off, there's the additional horsepower from its dual-motor powertrain: 543 ponies versus 456 for the dual-motor A6 e-tron. Chassis changes include bigger brakes, updated steering tuning, revised adaptive dampers, different anti-roll bars, and standard air springs. There are also tweaks to the exterior design, larger available wheels, different seats, and Dinamica faux-suede upholstery. For all that, if you drive the S6 back to back with its A6 sibling, the big takeaway is more power. The other sporting tweaks are noticeable but don't strongly alter the car's persona. Five-hundred-plus horsepower, though, certainly wakes up this mid-size four-door's acceleration, even if its nominal output in regular driving is only 496 horses (the extra 47 ponies are unlocked when you engage launch control). It's plenty quick in the real world, effortlessly whipping past dawdlers on two-lane roads. An estimated 60-mph time of under four seconds is certainly speedy, although it likely won't be as brisk as the 3.3-second result we saw from the 593-hp BMW i5 M60. Like the A6 e-tron, as well as the Q6 and SQ6 e-tron SUVs and the new Porsche Macan EV, the S6 uses the Volkswagen Group's impressive new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) platform. It features an 800-volt architecture for quicker recharging at up to 270 kilowatts. Juicing from 10 to 80 percent takes as little as 21 minutes. The 94.4-kWh battery enables an estimated range of 419 miles in the optimistic European WLTP test cycle, with Audi expecting the EPA to rate it at 324 miles.
