(18 Jan 2000) Voice and effects VOICED BY: Louise Bates Sectarian violence in eastern Indonesia has spread as gangs targeted local Christian minorities on the tourist island of Lombok, near Bali. The troubles erupted after local Muslims protested against the government's failure to stop the fighting between Muslims and Christians in Maluku and North Maluku provinces. Muslim mobs set fires in at least two restaurants near a beach resort just hours after hundreds of foreign tourists were evacuated to Bali. Meanwhile, the Maluku capital of Ambon remained calm but tense as Indonesia's military keep a watchful eye on the population. 00.01 They used to live side by side peacefully but this is how far the relationship between Christians and Muslims on the island of Lombok has degenerated. 00.11 The crowd was made up of Muslims. The car owned by members of the Christian minority - destroyed as ethnic and religious violence spreads across the Maluku islands. 00.21 Riot police attempt to prevent looting but their methods are often brutal and they are often accused of favouring the Muslim majority. 00.29 Religious and ethnic tolerance among the mixed population living on the string of Maluku islands used to be the norm. 00.36 Now members of all minority groups are taking up arms to protect their communities. 00.41 SOUNDBITE: (English) "We are prepared to keep the neighbourhood so there's no fight between Muslim and Hindu." SUPER CAPTION: Ketut Wirawan, Hindu local 00.57 An uneasy calm has settled over the troubled city of Ambon, where locals read daily of the violence towards minority groups that erupted on their island about a year ago. 01.08 Some parts of Ambon have already been declared no-man's land by the security forces as they attempt to prevent further looting. 01.16 It's estimated that around two thousand people have been killed since the violence began and many churches destroyed. 01.22 As the local military commander surveys the scene there seems no easy end to the culture of religious hatred that's gripping his city. 01.33 ENDS Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
