"In 2012, 13.7 million people had a history of cancer," begins Eric Kershnar, graduate of Brown University. In this innovative talk, Kershnar deploys his full expertise in a new area of science that is hunting down tumor cells for early prevention methods. Engaged, he speculates on the future uses of enrichment and isolation techniques as they present new ways to combat cancer. Eric Kershnar spent a lifetime in science. Born in Roxbury, CT, he attended Booth Free School and Shepaug for both middle and high school. He fondly remembers the middle school science fairs with Mr Ference, Biology with his soccer coach Mr. Gavenas, and his AP Biology class with Mr. Werkhoven – not the present teacher but his much more hip father. He attended Brown University, earning a B.A. in biology. Following graduation, he taught high school chemistry at the Providence Country Day School in Rhode Island. Intrigued by chemistry, he earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry at the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign researching in the field of transcription. After graduating, he moved back to Connecticut where he worked at Agilix Corporation developing technology to detect the changes in protein levels in animal models. Since 2006, he has worked at Ikonisys Inc. developing tests that aid in the diagnosis of cervical lesions and tests that identify and characterize cancerous tumor cells found in patient blood. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
