"Sandusky" means "at the cold water" in Wyandot. Founded in 1817, Sandusky originally was called Portland. In 1838, the Ohio government created Erie County and established Sandusky as the county seat. Sandusky grew quickly. By 1846, approximately three thousand people resided in the town. Two railroads served the community, and it was an important harbor on Lake Erie, making Sandusky an important economic center. In 1846, Sandusky merchants exported 843,746 bushels of wheat. The town consisted of numerous stores, two printing offices, two machine shops, two banks, six churches, one high school, and several iron furnaces. During the 1840s and 1850s, Sandusky also was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, with many residents assisting fugitive slaves in their search for freedom by transporting the African Americans to Canada. WHAT TO DO IN SANDUSKY, OHIO -CASTAWAY BAY is more than just a resort waterpark; it's a tropically themed paradise featuring 237 hotel rooms and suites, a 38,000-square-foot indoor waterpark, a 6,000-square-foot arcade, three restaurants, retail shops, a fitness center, and a craft and child activity center. Very family oriented, the park is adjacent to a marina and has space for meetings, events, and parties. -CEDAR POINT - There is something for everyone at Cedar Point Amusement Park. Featuring roller coasters, rides for thrill seekers, and kid-friendly rides, families will have a blast at the Roller Coaster Capital of the World. -OHIO VETERANS HOME MILITARY MUSEUM Memorabilia from the Civil War, Johnson's Island, world wars I and II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan can be viewed at the Ohio Veterans Homes Military Museum, which is located inside the I. F. Mack Building at the Ohio Veterans Home. The veterans home also maintains the museum and reference library, which is dedicated to the residents. -SANDUSKY SPEEDWAY Enjoy everything from mods, sports, street, and hobby races to kid's bike races, kids race car rides, and more. Adults will have a blast with the crate sprints and other activities. There is s $1 admission during Fan Appreciation Night. The speedway even uses race monitors to send timing information to smartphones, allowing absent fans to get live timing and scoring data from the timing system. NIAGARA FALLS INFORMATION: Niagara Falls was formed starting more than 12,000 years ago at the end of the Ice Age when large torrents of water were released from the melting ice, draining into the Niagara River. The water plunged over the edge of the Niagara Escarpment – to what is now known as Lewiston, NY. Eventually, the force of the water wore away the rock layers and Niagara Falls moved upstream, reaching its present location. Year after year, the formation continues with the annual freezing and thawing of the Niagara River, along with gradual erosion and periodic rock-falls. Remedial work has been completed to preserve the Falls and the volume of water has been reduced by diversion for hydroelectric power. Not only are the Falls themselves powerful, but the City of Niagara was the birthplace of hydroelectric power! In 1896, Nikola Tesla developed the alternating current system, which allowed for the transmission of power generated along the Niagara River to homes and businesses. The Niagara Gorge Discovery Center is located above the site of the Schoellkopf Power Station, from which electricity was first sold as a commodity. Today, power plants on both the American and Canadian side of the Falls produce nearly 2.5 million kilowatts of electricity.
