“It is Well with My Soul" has a profound story behind it: Horatio Spafford wrote these words in the face of extensive tragedy in his life. From losing his son to Scarlett fever and the personal impact caused by the great Chicago fire in 1871, to further loss in 1873, when his wife and four daughters set sail to Europe, only for the ship to collapse, his wife "saved alone." As Spafford rushed to Europe, the captain called him to say, “This is the spot where the ship went down.” In the face of that sleepless night, Spafford penned these immortal words. The tune name for this hymn is named after the fateful ship, 'Ville du Havre.' No matter what might be going on personally, knowing that God is there, and having the strength to say “it is well with my soul” in the face of incredible loss is remarkably moving. May we all experience the kind of faith and the strength that Spafford had to write such words. This setting by Dan Miller powerfully brings this hymn to life. It showcases the full resources of the instrument, from the softest to the loudest, the highest to the lowest, and even special stops with the sounds of harps and bells heard at the opening. In the climactic middle section, Miller evokes the text, "the trump shall resound." May this piece and this story provide a bit of comfort for your day. _________________________________ Jonathan Gregoire, organ Orgues Létourneau, Opus 87 Arts Foundation of St. Andrew Website | https://www.standrewumc.org/arts Facebook | / artsfoundationsa Instagram | / artsfoundationsa
