ARM unveils ARM v9 CPU and GPU cores for next generation smartphones and laptops These new Arm chips range from the flagship Cortex-X2 cores, which will power next-generation laptops and mobile devices and boast up to 40% more single-threaded performance than current laptop silicon, to the high-efficiency "Little" Cortex-A710 cores, which are designed for mixed use in higher-end laptops and mobile applications. Arm also has a new Cortex-A710 CPU core, as well as a new variety of Mali GPU cores, for the usual 'large' CPU function. Laptops and mobile devices powered by the new Arm chips will be available in 2022, though the exact date will depend on the manufacturer. Let's go right in and discover what the Arm ecosystem's immediate future holds. The Cortex-X2 is the stack's top-end core, with Arm claiming a 16 percent increase in single-core performance over the Cortex-X1 at the same process node and clocks (ISO process/frequency), as well as a doubling of machine learning performance (matrix multiplication). The X2 cores were developed with the greatest IPC in the range in mind, and the voltage/frequency curve was adjusted for performance. The upgraded DynamIQ Shared Unit (DSU-1110) fabric that binds the parts together will allow clusters of these cores to drop into higher-end laptops and notebooks in groups as large as eight cores. Up to 16MB of L3 cache and 32MB of unified System Level Cache are supported by eight-core X2 clusters (SLC). Other IP blocks, such as GPU cores and DRAM, are also connected via the CoreLink CI/NI-700 interfaces. I'll get to that in a minute.
