The 2024 British Blind and Disabled Golf Open Feature

The 2024 British Blind and Disabled Golf Open was held at the breathtaking Massereene Golf Club in sunny County Antrim Northern Ireland from 17th to the 19th June 2024. Mayor Neil Kelly from Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, was a special guest on hand to welcome the golfers from all over the world and speak of the importance of the event. Irish disability golf captain, Paul Kelly, spoke of the impact of events like these, and the importance of inclusivity for the disabled in sports. R and A inclusion and diversity Director, Barry McCluskey, travelled from Scotland to participate, and spoke about the event and the efforts of the R and A in promoting inclusion in golf for the disabled. Alejandro DiMiguel, current World Blind Golf Champion and IBGA Board Director, from Madrid, Spain, spoke about his experience at Massereene Golf Club. In glorious sunshine, USA golfer Paul McCormack defeated the rest of the field after a tense and exciting battle to the finish. Many spectators from the community were thrilled and amazed at the high quality of golf and the terrific competitiveness and camaraderie amongst the golfers and guides. After his victory, Paul spoke of his experience and of the impact and importance of these inclusion events. Northern Ireland Blind Golf Captain, Kate Daly, won the ladies blind golf championship. Kate spoke about her experience at the event, and what this means for blind and disabled Golf moving forward Northern Ireland Blind Golf partners, Caryn & Mark Young were thrilled to win their category in the competition. This was a truly amazing week for visually impaired and disabled golf and for the wider visual disabled community worldwide. The 2024 Open will leave a lasting legacy and has set a high bar for future international disabled events. Everyone is looking forward to participating in the 2025 Open, which will be held in Scotland.
