Chiemsee in the light of the winter sun - boat trip to Fraueninsel and Herreninsel

The Chiemsee, the "Bavarian Sea", is beautifully situated in front of the Chiemgau mountains. With a size of almost 80 km², it is the largest lake in Bavaria and the third largest lake in Germany. On a freezing cold winter's day we set off by ship to the Chiemsee Islands. We start in Bernau. The climatic health resort is located on the southwestern shore of Lake Chiemsee, at the foot of the Chiemgau Alps. After the Second World War, the American army turned the rest house on the lake built by the National Socialists into the "Lake Hotel", a recreation center for American soldiers stationed in Germany and their families. The hotel was closed in 2003, part of the site is used today used by a spa clinic. On our walk along the lake we come across the old American jetty, now rotten and overgrown. The Chiemsee shipping does not operate from Bernau in winter. So we have to drive a few kilometers further to Prien. The legendary steam tram from 1887 snorts and whistles from Prien train station to the port of Prien/Stock up to this day. The first stop on our boat tour is the Fraueninsel. It is significantly smaller than the Herreninsel and, in contrast to it, inhabited. The Benedictine Abbey of Frauenwörth is the oldest nunnery in Germany. Besides the beautiful Marienmünster the bell tower is the symbol of the island. Nearby is the 8th-century Carolingian Gate Hall, one of the oldest buildings in Bavaria. In addition to monastic life, the Fraueninsel is also known as an artists' colony. Well-known Bavarian painters and writers sought and found peace and new strength here. Even today there are still many handicrafts on the island and you can buy original souvenirs in the small shops. Or you can strengthen yourself with Bavarian delicacies in the beer gardens and stock up on monastery specialties such as marzipan or a herbal liqueur in the monastery shop. Many small paths lead through the village and over the Fraueninsel. The island can be walked around in about 30 minutes. In the middle of the island you shouldn't miss the two more than 1000-year-old linden trees, which contribute to the romantic atmosphere of the island. The ship leaves Fraueninsel and continues to Herreninsel. The largest of the three Chiemsee islands is home to what is probably the most famous attraction in the region: Herrenchiemsee Palace. However, our first stop after the pier is the former Augustinian monastery. In 1873 the former monastery, including the entire Herreninsel, was bought by the Bavarian King Ludwig II. Hence the name "Old Castle". Today it serves as a museum and picture gallery. A walk across the Herreninsel then brings us to the Herrenchiemsee New Palace. King Ludwig II had the palace built in 1886 inspired by Versailles and as a kind of temple of glory for his idol, King Louis XIV of France. Herrenchiemsee Palace was Ludwig II's last major construction project, and he only lived in it for a few days. The work ended with the death of the king in June 1886, the castle remained largely unfinished. Like his other buildings, Ludwig II never wanted to open Herrenchiemsee Palace to the public and wanted the palaces to be destroyed after his death. Luckily, this wish of the fairy tale king was not fulfilled, today we can walk through the castle park and admire the building. Now that winter is over, the water features are mothballed and the pools drained. But there are no crowds of visitors like in summer. We enjoy the afternoon sun and walk back to the jetty.
