Hi guys, I needed to walnut blast my intake ports because they were badly clogged with carbon deposits. The car still got 36 mpg (60/40 hwy/city driving). With these turbo diesels 6 of the intake ports run through the valve cover and straight down through the cylinder head. That said, the valve cover needs to be off to walnut blast the head, As you can imagine, this exposes the entire valvetrain to any blast media that happens to escape the port. I went to great lengths to avoid this by making a gasketed plate that covered the other intake and injector ports and I had visqueen covering as much of the valvetrain as possible. Needless to say, blast media got into the valvetrain anyway. So, I had no choice but to pull the engine, remove the cylinder head to make sure no media got into the engine via any open valves, and reassemble. If you pause some of the other videos on here you can see blast media in the valvetrain. So, I decided to record this the best that I could to hopefully help anyone else who happens to be in the same predicament. Unfortunately my Gopro shut down several times due to overheating and I didn't have time to capture everything in detail because I had to get the car back on the road ASAP. Hopefully you can get a decent idea of how things look and what's involved from the video. As always, I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
