The rights to this recording belong to the Nine Network of Public Media and the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra. Michael Lu (17 years old) plays Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, Op. 23 with the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra (SLSYO) conducted by Gemma New, then-SLSYO Music Director and St. Louis Symphony Resident Conductor, in the orchestra's season-closing concert. This sold-out concert took place at Powell Symphony Hall in St. Louis, MO, and was broadcast on PBS affiliate Nine Network of Public Media (KETC). Live and unedited, May 26, 2017. One encore, which was dedicated to the late Seth Carlin: third movement of Beethoven’s Sonata Op. 57 (“Appassionata”), was unfortunately not broadcast. Pianist Michael Lu was born in Boston in 1999, moved to St. Louis with his family at age 3, and began piano studies there at age 5. As a concerto soloist, he has worked with conductors such as Stephen Mulligan and Gemma New; as a chamber musician, he has collaborated with Maria João Pires, Franklin Cohen, and principal members of the Cleveland and Philadelphia Orchestras. His mentors include Antonio Pompa-Baldi, Stanislav Ioudenitch, Seth Carlin, Reid Smith, and Jon Kimura Parker. He founded the St. Louis International Classical Music Enterprise in July 2025. Founded in 1970 by Leonard Slatkin, the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra has had a significant impact on the region's young musicians for nearly half a century. There are over 2,000 alumni in a wide range of professions, including six members of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. For more information, please visit https://www.slso.org/en/edu/youth-orc...
