If you watched Breaking Bad, you're probably under the impression that New Mexico is the methamphetamine capital of the US, but it's not. These people are using a dangerous "shake-and-bake" do-it-yourself version where all you need is a handful of common household items and pseudoephedrine, which is found in common cold tablets. So, in 2006, the US government passed a law to keep the drug behind the counter, but Oregon and Mississippi went a step further and made pseudoephedrine prescription-only. The result: the number of labs in both states immediately plummeted: from 600 to below 100 in Oregon and 1,000 labs to under 300 in Mississippi. With Meth use costing the U.S. economy more than $20 billion a year, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) announced he was working on federal legislation that would require a prescription to get any product containing pseudoephedrine in every state, but the bill was blocked because of heavy lobbying by pseudoephedrine drug companies who argued that consumers' ability to fight the common cold would be hindered if the law passed.
