Incorporating Data Quality into your Teaching and Research Consultations

They will introduce a new open educational resource on data quality literacy, which features an open-access e-book based on insights from leaders in academia, government, and the corporate sector, shared during the IMLS National Forum Webinar Series. Additionally, the resource offers practical tips and knowledge briefs on data quality topics. The panel will engage the audience in a lively discussion on incorporating data quality and utilizing these open educational materials for teaching and research consultations. These materials were partially made available through an IMLS grant on building the capacity of academic librarians to understand data quality issues and evaluate data quality. About our speakers: Grace Liu is the Associate Professor and Business Librarian at West Chester University. Since joining WCU in 2019, she has initiated several grant projects on topics including evaluating online sources, data quality literacy, college student retention, career information literacy, and equity efforts in libraries. She is the Principal Investigator of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) National Forum grant project Building Capacity of Academic Librarians in Understanding Quantitative Data, Data Quality Problems, and Evaluating Data Quality [RE-252357-OLS-22]. She published the article Data Quality Problems Troubling Business and Financial Researchers: A Literature Review and Synthetic Analysis in the Journal of Business & Finance Librarianship in 2020. Bobray Bordelon joined Princeton University as the Economics & Finance Librarian in 1993 and has led Data & Statistical Services since 2004. He is the former director of the Cultural Policy and the Arts National Data Archive (CPANDA) (2006-2015). He has served in many leadership roles in various data and library organizations and is currently Vice-President of IASSIST and a member of the Roper Archival Advisory Committee. He co-taught “Providing Social Science Data Services: Strategies for Design and Operation” (2014-2018) as part of the ICPSR summer program and served on ICPSR Council (2018-2024). He has been honored with the William H. Flanigan Award for Distinguished Service as an ICPSR Official Representative and the ALA BRASS Award for Excellence in Business Librarianship. He has authored various articles and chapters on a wide variety of topics, guest edited journals, and is a frequent speaker. Jennifer C. Boettcher has had a prolific career spanning 30-plus years. She is a nationally known business librarian who is known for her books on government information and the economic census as well as her articles about NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) codes. She has published dozens of articles and has given more than 40 presentations at the national and local levels. Jennifer has received several awards including the 2023 RUSA Isadore Gilbert Mudge Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to reference librarianship, the 2022 Special Library Association’s Business and Finance Community Distinguished Member Award, and the 2010 BRASS Gale Cengage Award for Excellence in Business Librarianship. She is a mentor to many in the profession and a committed and active member of the American Library Association, Special Libraries Association, the Academic Business Libraries Director group, CABAL (Capital Area Business Academic Librarians), a group that she founded, and is still learning from IASSIST. Rashelle Nagar is the Business Research & Collections Librarian at Stanford Graduate School of Business Library. She is the Co-Principal Investigator of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) National Forum grant project Building Capacity of Academic Librarians in Understanding Quantitative Data, Data Quality Problems, and Evaluating Data Quality [RE-252357-OLS-22].
