The Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal is 46 miles long and has 43 locks. It is also known as the ‘Staffs & Worcester Canal’. It links at it’s northern end the Trent and Mersey Canal at Great Haywood Junction (Staffordshire) to the River Severn at Stourport-on-Severn (Worcestershire). In 1771, the southern section of the Canal from Compton (near Wolverhampton) to the River Severn was opened. The rest of the canal from Compton to Great Haywood Junction opened in the following year. It was one of the major routes of the canal age, and would have been constantly busy with coal boats. Due to the length of ‘Staffs & Worcs’ Canal walk, I have broken my journey into two separate videos. Part 1, Great Haywood Junction to Compton Lock, Days 1 and Part of Day 2 (this video). This video covers the route from the start of the Canal at Great Haywood Junction, Staffordshire to an overnight stop in Gailey (12.9 miles). Day 2 of my journey in this video, is the 10.3 mile walk to Compton Lock, Compton to the west of Wolverhampton.
