Its special feature is that you can walk behind the falling water. This hidden path in the forests of the Brecon Beacons looks like a scene from an adventure movie. The scenery here is a subterranean masterpiece, where the Hepste and Mellte rivers have carved deep, limestone gorges cloaked in ancient, temperate rainforest teeming with mosses and ferns. Culturally, the falls are steeped in Welsh folklore and industrial history, as the surrounding silica mines once powered the fires of the South Wales Valleys. The unique allure of Sgwd yr Eira lies in its geology; a hard band of sandstone overlies softer shale, creating a natural recess that allows you to walk directly behind the thundering curtain of water.
