Today’s episode takes us to the far north of Canada, to Manitoba Province. The town of Churchill is smack dab in the middle of a polar bear migration route. Polar bear watching is one of the area's biggest industries and people file in to lift the profits of local businesses each season. The reason the polar bears converge on Churchill is to wait for the formation of sea ice on Hudson Bay and the beginning of winter, which is their prime hunting season for seals and whales. The land of this area is rolling hills of tundra with caribou herds thundering across seasonally in their migration. Around 5 AM, on November 1st, 2013, Erin Greene was leaving a Halloween party, accompanied by a male friend of hers, whom we will refer to as Steve, and a female friend, whom we will call Jill. The three friends walked and talked through the small village, unaware of the events that would soon unfold and change their lives forever. Erin was originally from Montreal, Quebec, Canada and had moved to Churchill in July. She was offered a job at a bakery and restaurant called “Gypsy’s”, that was owned by her friends aunt and uncle. As soon as she moved to Churchill, the locals began to educate her about the frequency and procedures of polar bear intrusions into town. She was told to be careful and always watch for the bears, as they frequently appeared suddenly. Churchill has a program which notifies residents and visitors to the presence of polar bears. Conservation officers immediately arrive at the reported location of the bear and fire “bear bangers” which are essentially fireworks that flash and make noise, designed to frighten the bears out of town and back into the tundra. As the friends neared Bill Ayote’s house Jill looked over her shoulder and was horrified to see a huge polar bear closing in on them. Jill and Steve immediately took off running, powered by the adrenaline surging through their bodies. Erin, by contrast, was paralyzed by her fear. She froze as she and the bear stared directly into each other's eyes as it clearly focused on her as its target. Erin instinctively wrapped her arms around her head to protect it. The polar bear immediately clasped its jaws onto Erins head after biting her arms in several places and scratching her legs with its claws. The bear picked Erin up by her head and began to shake her around, as her screams shattered the early morning quiet. As Erin was being lifted into the air, Jill ran from door to door, pounding on them in an attempt to rouse help from them. Steve managed to run a few steps back toward Erin, then back the other way a few more, and back again. The situation was more than his mind could process. He was teetering between helping his friend and risking his life, or running to get help. Blissfully unaware of the life and death struggle that was taking place just outside of his door, 69 year old Bill Ayote was dozing off in his chair in front of his television. He was an early riser and began each day by watching the early morning news. Bill was known in town for riding his three wheeled bicycle around and enjoying word puzzles. He was a quiet and unassuming man. Bill was jolted awake by Erin’s screams right outside the door of his home. He was in his pajamas and a sweater, but knew he needed to see what exactly was going on. He raced to his front door and flung it open and witnessed a horrifying sight. Bill could see Erin lifted off the ground a few feet by her head by a towering polar bear. She was being shaken back and forth in a maneuver bears use to break the neck of their prey. Like Steve, Bill was temporarily paralyzed, undecided on what exactly to do. His first thought was to call the bear patrol, but he knew the girl would be dead by the time they responded. He had given up his guns after the Manitoba Hydro Corporation constructed a dam that ruined local hunting and fishing so he quickly looked around and saw the shovel that he left on his porch. Now armed only with his shovel, Bill knew he had to target a very vulnerable part of the bear. He decided he would aim at its eyes and try to blind it. As soon as he approached within striking distance, the bear glanced up at him, giving him a perfect shot at its eyes. Bill lifted the shovel high over his head and brought it down in a chopping motion as hard as he could. He scored a direct hit on the bears eyes, causing it to release Erin, who immediately scrambled toward Bill's house. Bill turned as quickly as a 69 year old man being accosted by a ticked off polar bear could.
