Various of deportees eating STORYLINE: More than 900 illegal Filipino workers deported from Malaysia arrived in the southern Philippine city of Zamboanga on Wednesday, following a crackdown by the Malaysian government against illegal migrants. Waving deportation documents as their ship docked at the pier, most of the deportees said they were happy to be home, claiming to have been maltreated by Malaysian police while in detention, awaiting deportation. Malaysian police and soldiers last month began the biggest operation in years to root out illegals in Sabah, which borders Philippine territorial waters and Indonesian-ruled territory. In January, hundreds of security officers raided an illegal workers' settlement in eastern Malaysia, destroying scores of houses and arresting at least 50 Filipinos. Rosni Usman has been living in Sabah since 1991 when she joined her husband who is employed there. Along with her daughter and grandchildren she was among the deportees who arrived in Zamboanga on Wednesday. Her husband stayed behind because he had proper working documents. She complained that Malaysian police did not treat them well. Mukim Adam was working as a construction worker in Sabah. He too is happy to be back in the Philippines. The deportees were transported to the compound of the Department of Social Welfare and Development of D-S-W-D, in Zamboanga, where they given food. DSWD Regional Director Tarabji Parishia said that the deportees will be advised to sort out proper working documents, if they still wish to return to Malaysia. More than 3 thousand undocumented Filipinos have been deported from Malaysia this year,. 90 percent of those who have been sent home from Malaysia are from Sulu and Tawi-Tawi, the Philippines' southernmost island provinces closest to Sabah.
