Hi, I’m Dana and I have been a pediatric physical therapist for 25 years. Don’t you wish our patient’s primitive reflexes were textbook examples? ~One of the reasons primitive reflexes are so difficult to understand is because they look different on every child. I started to understand it better as a spectrum of primitive reflexes. For example, just because a child has the ATNR reflex it does not mean that the opposite arm AND leg are going to bend when the head turns to the side. It could be the arm and NOT the leg. ~I’ve also seen all three reflexes present in many children so it really gets confusing. That’s what this sweet pea all the way from Ireland is dealing with! ~I personally like to work on the TLR first because I find it the easiest to integrate. We build up slowly on the tummy with the elbows under the shoulder, the legs straight, and the head up. Build up in very small increments (sometimes 30 seconds) per week until you reach 5-10 minutes. ~Next, I work on the STNR reflex. Use arm immobilizers or this is going to be very difficult (see my immobilizers highlights on Instagram). Place your child’s lower legs under one of your legs and then his trunk over your other leg. Place his hands on the floor and help him lift his head. We want the child to look up and down with ease without him getting upset. Did you know you can work on ATNR like this as well? Just have him look side to side instead. Build up slowly. ~You can also work on the ATNR by turning his head gently, correcting the action, and then releasing. After time, you should start to see the “fencing arms” and bent leg lessen. ~Retained primitive reflexes delay gross motor milestones. Therapists and parents, you can work on gross motor skills all day long but if you’re not addressing the primitive reflexes those skills are going to take a really long time to attain. ~Do you have questions?
