This week in Episode 52, we’ve hit one of the biggest milestones in our renovation journey — sandblasting our 200-year-old Scottish stone cottage! After months of searching, we finally found sandblasters willing to make the trip out here to remove decades of thick, plasticky, non-breathable paint and cement render. At last, our cottage walls can finally breathe again. 🌿 Watch as layers of paint are stripped away to reveal beautiful raw stone that hasn’t seen the light of day in almost two centuries. Alongside the blasting, skilled stonemasons repoint the tricky gable ends with lime mortar, using mortar guns for precision — and the results are stunning. The sandblasters arrive and begin stripping away layers of old, non-breathable paint from the cottage walls. 06:33 – 👀 Johnny & Adam check out the gable end — amazing to see the old stone exposed after all these years! 🪨✨ 10:10 – 💥 Sandblasters move on to the front of the cottage, peeling back even more layers. 11:45 – 😅 Johnny has a go at sandblasting — and loves it! “Right… what can I blast next?” 😂⚒️ 18:45 – 🧱 The stonemasons begin re-pointing the gable end with lime mortar. Using mortar guns makes the process far easier — genius! 🙌 22:42 – 👷 Chat with Stevie and his team as they do a fantastic job with the lime pointing. 26:27 – 🎨 Remember Johnny’s failed Peelaway paint removal attempt? The sandblasters tackle that stubborn area too. Meanwhile, the stonemasons redo poor work left behind by the previous stonemasons on the opposite gable wall — raking out and repointing to stop water ingress. 💦🏡 27:51 – 😬 Essential work is underway, but Johnny talks about the huge mess it’s creating inside — dust everywhere! 29:04 – 🌬️ The sandblasters start on the side of the cottage. At last, the old paint comes off and the walls can finally breathe again. 🌿 31:13 – 🧹 Johnny tidies up the porch after the blasting chaos — though the work is far from finished. 35:36 – 😎 Adam dons his “steampunk goggles” and starts chipping away cement from the porch walls. He may look ridiculous, but safety first! 🥽 40:21 – 🎬 We end this week’s episode with the sandblasters still hard at work on the side of the cottage.
