Forteresse du vertige comme certains châteaux cathares, dominant la vallée du Rhône et la plaine de Valence, Crussol contrôlait une voie de communication très fréquentée depuis la plus haute antiquité. Au Xe siècle, les invasions normandes, les raids de pillage des sarrasins contraignent les seigneurs à construire des maisons fortes, pour défendre leurs terres et protéger leurs populations, la France se couvre alors de forteresses féodales. C'est à cette époque qu'une première fortification est édifiée à Crussol, site défensif de grande qualité ; au début probablement donjon en bois et palissade mêlant pierre sèche et bois. Une première mention de l'existence d'un château à Crussol, Cruciolo de son nom latin, apparaît dans une charte du Cartulaire de l'abbaye de Saint-Chaffre en 936. Le château sous son aspect actuel est l'œuvre de Gérard BASTET (Vassal lointain du Comte de Toulouse), nouveau maître de Crussol en 1110, après son mariage avec l'héritière des premiers seigneurs du lieu. Il commença la construction, achevée par son fils, d'un impressionnant château fort, la montagne calcaire fournissant blocs de pierre et chaux en abondance. Aménagements et embellissements se poursuivirent jusqu'au XIVe siècle. La forteresse s'étend sur une superficie de plus de 3 hectares, protégée par un châtelet, tour de défense surveillant l'entrée et par une enceinte de 800 mètres, constituée d'un rempart crénelé d'une hauteur moyenne de 8 mètres. La muraille nord-ouest offre les traces de surélévations successives: protections indispensables pour résister aux assaillants. Au cours de ces quelques siècles, les seigneurs de Crussol s’élèvent parfois aux charges les plus nobles du royaume. Chambellan de Louis Xl, héritier du comté d’Uzès par son mariage ou sénéchal guerroyant en Italie, la lignée des Crussol, de par ses charges officielles, abandonne progressivement le château ancestral isole et battu par les vents. Mais l’agitation des hommes anime encore cette forteresse qui devient bastion envié des catholiques et des protestants pendant les guerres de religion.
