About this video: This video presents my solo piano arrangement of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Badinerie from the Overture (often called the Orchestral Suite) No. 2 in B minor, BWV 1067. The sheet music features integrated harmonic analysis with Roman numerals and modern chord symbols, along with suggested fingerings to support performance. The arrangement, based on a careful study of original manuscript sources and early editions, is designed to be relatively accessible while preserving the characteristic brilliance and liveliness of the original. It employs a two-voice piano texture: the right hand performs the flute part, incorporating selected ornamental passages from the first violin part. The left hand plays the basso continuo line with minor variations. In the score, embellishments (trills and appoggiaturas) present in Bach’s autograph manuscript, but not performed in the audio recording, are indicated in parentheses. These may be redundant on piano, but performers can decide which to include. Note that the score is fully written out without repeat signs, allowing the first exposition of sections A and B to be presented without embellishments, while the repeats include them. For more details on the specific features of this arrangement, please refer to the preface of the PDF booklet linked above. Tempo recommendations suggest a lively but controlled speed of around 108 BPM, balancing rhythmic vitality with clarity. The harmonic analysis is based on the full orchestral score, so some chord symbols and Roman numerals may not directly match the two-voice piano arrangement. Modulations are notated by showing the original key in italics and parentheses, with the new key boxed below, alongside the relevant scale degrees. From that point on, the analysis follows the new key. Enjoyed this video?
