Mango is going home tomorrow after being here for 3 weeks. We've made tremendous progress in her outward reactivity towards unfamiliar dogs. She wasn't able to play when she first got here because of the amount of unfamiliar dogs on site. Now I can present a tug toy at any point in time and she's locked in. We began with differential conditioning which is the process of differentiating between what she used to do and what we need her to do now. The wait and reward method was heavily relied upon. When she started to react, we'd stop walking and wait for her to stop. Once she did, we would start walking again. Most often, we did one step at a time. Once I was able to slow her down, we were able to start classical conditioning. This process involves pairing a negative stimuli with a positive one. My favorite positive stimuli is the tug toy. Reactivity releases a bunch of energy, let's redirect that energy into something positive. A game of tug is the perfect pairing.
