The most common versions claim they are graves of nine chieftains, nine shepherds lost in a winter storm, nine warriors returning from the 1798 Rebellion, or even nine highwaymen. Local tradition links the stones with the 1798 rebellion, saying the men killed and buried here were rebels returning to County Carlow from the war in Wexford, later known in lore as the “unknown warriors”. • Folkloric Tales: Several stories recount supernatural or cautionary aspects.
