#vrocireland #vulcanridersassociation #theninestones The Nine Stones, located on the saddle between Mount Leinster and Slievebawn in County Carlow, Ireland, are a mysterious and evocative landmark with a rich blend of history, legend, and folklore. These stones are small—none more than about 60cm high—and are set in a row approximately 12 meters long. The true origin and purpose of the Nine Stones are unknown, and no archaeological evidence has firmly established their date or function. However, their history is woven from several intriguing tales and local traditions: • Burial Site Legends: Many believe the stones mark the burial place of nine individuals. The most common versions claim they are graves of nine chieftains, nine shepherds lost in a winter storm, nine warriors returning from the 1798 Rebellion, or even nine highwaymen. Local tradition links the stones with the 1798 rebellion, saying the men killed and buried here were rebels returning to County Carlow from the war in Wexford, later known in lore as the “unknown warriors”. • Folkloric Tales: Several stories recount supernatural or cautionary aspects. One legend says that any traveler who sees a stone out of place must reset it or risk being chased and struck on the legs by it. Another story involves Saint Moling—he asked a man for bread, and due to a twist of words and perhaps miraculous intervention, the man’s rocks became the stones still seen today. • Cultural Significance: Nine as a number holds mystical importance in Celtic tradition, being a “trinity of trinities.” This has prompted speculation that the stones could date back to pre-Christian times and may have had ritual or ceremonial significance. • Archaeological Perspective: Some suggest the stones may have had a ceremonial or memorial function, but there’s no evidence for astronomical alignment or a specific prehistoric use. The site does not clearly fit known categories of ancient Irish stone rows, though it sits near older cairns and other monuments. • Customs: In former times, travelers would place a small pebble on each of the stones—possibly as a sign of respect or remembrance. Today, the Nine Stones Viewing Point is not only a location of mystery and legend but also offers spectacular views across eight Irish counties and, on a clear day, even the Welsh coast. The stones stand as a testament to the enduring power of local tradition and the enigmatic appeal of Ireland’s prehistoric landscape LOCATION ► https://maps.app.goo.gl/gPepvJJNLURNa...
