/ @rdmediacast Bedlington is an ancient market town with a rich history. It has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, with a burial site discovered behind Front Street. It was historically an exclave of County Durham, known as Bedlingtonshire, until it became part of Northumberland in 1844. Bedlington flourished with the growth of ironworks and coal mines. The ironworks, established over 250 years ago, even produced parts for George Stephenson's first locomotive. Mining was central to the town's identity until the 1980s. The town's longest-standing building, parts of it date back to the 11th century. It's said the monks of Durham rested St. Cuthbert's body here in 1069. Bedlington Country Park: A designated local nature reserve, this park offers woodland and grassland along the River Blyth. It's a haven for wildlife, including red squirrels, foxes, deer, and various birds like kingfishers. Plessey Woods Country Park: Located on the outskirts, it features woodland walks, a visitor's centre, cafe, and children's play area. It also has an art trail with unique installations. Gallagher Park: Built on the site of a former colliery, it features woodlands, wildflower meadows, sports fields, and mountain bike trails. Riverside Walks: Bedlington is surrounded by countryside and the River Blyth, with walks leading to the sea, about 2 miles away. You can find stepping stones across the river at Humford Mill. / @rdmediacast
