Luton has a lot to offer its +200,000 residents, but it hasn't had a purpose-built theatre to entertain its residents with since the 1950s. Spurred on by the absence of such a venue in his hometown, Lutonian filmmaker Alan Jaksic took it upon himself to come up with a design for a brand-new theatre building with the help of architecture student Baiyan Tong of Loughborough University. Inspired by Luton's architectural heritage, this design could become the basis of Luton's future theatre, and in turn help change common perceptions of the town based on negative press and even on local opinion. This is Alan's dream of a better Luton, which he hopes will come true! Produced and presented by Alan Jaksic (pron. YACK-shich), Dreaming Of A Better Luton (DOABL) aims to look at what's missing in Luton, especially in its town centre, and what could be made a lot better therein. It will also confront the issue of Luton's reputation as a "crap town" reinforced by news articles and online surveys shared on social media. Jaksic is a Luton-based video editor and independent filmmaker who wants to see Luton's image and in turn its reputation improve for the sake of its +200,000 residents, hence why he's dreaming of a better Luton! These dreams will be depicted in the form of architectural visualisations of buildings missing from Luton, which'll hopefully capture the imagination of his viewers and maybe, just maybe, inspire interest in a contractor somewhere?! PPS: In case anyone's wondering what I mean by "purpose-built": this term is used to refer to a building that was designed and built to serve a particular purpose, e.g. a purpose-built church is a building that was designed and built to be church, rather than a building that was designed and built to be something else before being converted into a church.
