Bijapur (Vijayapura), Karnataka, India 👑 Built by: Mohammad Adil Shah, the 7th ruler of the Adil Shahi dynasty 🕰️ Construction Period: Started around 1626 CE and completed in 1656 CE ⚰️ Purpose: Gol Gumbaz was built as the tomb (mausoleum) for Mohammad Adil Shah after his death. ⸻ 🧱 Architectural Details • The name “Gol Gumbaz” means “Round Dome” (from Persian: Gol = round, Gumbaz = dome). • The monument is made entirely of dark grey basalt stone. • It was designed by the famous architect Yaqut of Dabul. • The dome has a diameter of 44 meters (144 ft) — making it one of the largest domes in the world, even without any supporting pillars! ⸻ 🎧 The Whispering Gallery • One of the most unique features of Gol Gumbaz is the “Whispering Gallery” — a circular balcony around the inside of the dome. • Even the faintest whisper made here can be heard clearly on the opposite side due to the acoustics of the dome. ⸻ ⚰️ Inside the Tomb • Inside, there are seven tombs, including those of: • Mohammad Adil Shah • His wives • His mistresses • His daughter • His grandson • The real graves are below the main floor, in a vaulted chamber. ⸻ ✨ Interesting Facts • The structure is built on a massive square platform with four minarets at the corners — each minaret has seven floors connected by spiral staircases. • From the top, you can get a panoramic view of Bijapur city. • Gol Gumbaz is often compared to the Taj Mahal for its grandeur and symmetry, though its architectural style is Deccan Islamic rather than Mughal. ⸻ 📸 Gol Gumbaz is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and is one of the most visited heritage sites in Karnataka.
