After the Patriot surrender of Charleston, British forces moved in to the back country, hoping to locate American officers that may have escaped. In Stateburg, South Carolina, they targeted a specific plantation and burned the house to the ground, leaving the family with nothing but a ham for dinner. The home just so happened to belong to Thomas Sumter, who resigned his commission two years earlier.
