What evidence is there that we are experiencing a global wave of democratic “backsliding” – a gradual reversal of democratic norms and standards? This panel will examine this concept, also called de-democratization, and trace its link to the rise of populism in both Europe and the United States, where freedom of speech and press, the legitimacy of election results, and long-standing institutional norms have been attacked for political gain. What can we do to prevent further erosion of democratic norms, especially here at home.
