Various shots of meeting STORYLINE: Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan met Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for talks in Tehran on Sunday. The leaders were expected to discuss how their two countries can help stabilise the Middle East. Erdogan was welcomed by the Iranian Vice President Parviz Davoudi. Before his arrival, Erdogan said discussions would touch on the situations in Iraq, Lebanon and Syria. He denied suggestions that he would be passing along a message from Washington about Iran's nuclear program. US officials believe Iran's nuclear programme is intended to produce a nuclear bomb, which Iran denies. Turkey has repeatedly called on Iran to be more transparent and to allay Western concerns by cooperating more fully with international inspectors. Erdogan arrived in Tehran on Saturday and is also scheduled to meet with Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, before returning to Ankara. Turkey is a member of the Western military alliance NATO. The country is also 99 percent Muslim and enjoys friendly relations with Iran, with which it shares a long border.
