The Urgent Need for Postapocalypses

Frederic Jameson builds his own utopia by ousting the postapocalypse, but he can only do so by imagining the same world-ending crisis (the same fantasy of a quick end to politics) that could actually lead us into something utopic. Jameson doesn't analyze the sameyness of postapocalypses because that same sameyness (repetitive fantasy pleasure) applies to utopias too. Fantasy is the very vehicle of mass mobilization that Jameson's utopia imagines. Whereas the fantasy staged in postapocalypses is one of getting us to our own position by which we can really act, really engage the fabric of our psychic worlds. Postapocalypse and utopia are both tools of engaging social antagonism; they both have a political thrust. But while Jameson attempts to get beyond politics itself, the real move is the postapocalyptic one of preparing us to properly engage the world in the first place.
