IFD Chief Ernest Malone stopped by to greet the 15 students and 12 instructors at the Central Indiana Public Safety Dive School (PSDDR1) Class #20 during their open water dive evolutions at Somerset Lakes. The students are in week 2 of 6 weeks of intense training led by IFD Dive Commander Jerry Richert. As a former rescue diver himself, Chief Malone knows a thing or two about the rigors these students are in for and stopped by to offer some words of encouragement. Also on hand was friend of the #IFD, Alexandros Malagaris from Samos Greece. Malagaris is an PADI Dive Instructor who connected with the IFD in 2016 after a plea for assistance from 5000 miles away. Samos Greece is an island in the Eastern Aegean Sea – and was at the time, inundated with refugees travelling by sea - seeking shelter on the island. Encountering treacherous conditions - many of the refugees did not make the passage safely and were either stranded or killed during their travel. In frigid waters off the coast of Samos, the volunteer dive team headed by Alexandros, was part of an extraordinary effort to rescue or recover survivors. Jerry reached out to Alexandros and asked how IFD could help. Equipment and prayers was his reply. Within 30 days – Jerry collected – repaired – packaged and sent boxes of unused dive equipment. The non-asset tagged equipment had been sitting at Station 54 since the IFD/Franklin Township merger. For weeks during his off time – Jerry tested, sealed and readied dry suits, AGA masks, communications devices and undergarments for these volunteer divers. Soliciting UPS - he negotiated a reduced rate shipping fee of $675.00 which was then paid for by Dive Rescue International - Public Safety – simply because Jerry asked. The divers received the equipment just before Christmas in 2016 and were elated by the good will of their new American friends. Alexandros and his dive team helped 950 refugees and during his visit this week, told IFD Chief Malone that his team would not have been able do accomplish their mission without the assistance of dive gear from IFD. This visit, 5 years in the making, is Alexandros first time in the Hoosier state. Dive students hail from Indianapolis Fire Department (8), Fishers Fire Department (3), Noblesville Fire Department (3) and Bargersville Fire Department (1). As many of the students discover, rescue diving is not for everyone and 5 students have tapped out thus far. The team effort to make this class happen requires each department to bring something to the table - either instructors or logistics. #Teamwork
