Meet Jai Singh, an award-winning farmer from Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, who has been mastering the art of banana farming since 1983. Recognized as the Best Banana Farmer by ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research), Jai Singh’s innovative approach has turned challenges into opportunities. In a previous conversation with News Potli, he shared his early experiences in potato farming. This time, he takes us through his journey of growing bananas in extreme weather conditions. Growing bananas in a sub-tropical region where summers hit 42-44°C and winters bring severe frost isn’t easy. But Jai Singh has found innovative ways to adapt and succeed. His journey reveals tried-and-tested techniques that are transforming banana farming in Uttar Pradesh and beyond. Here’s what we learned: Growth Timeline: Jai Singh emphasizes that banana plants must grow to 3.5 ft by mid-November to survive harsh winters and achieve maximum yield. Planting Tips: Always plant on raised beds after 3 PM to protect young plants from the harsh afternoon sun. Water the plants the same night to ensure proper survival and establishment. It takes around 20 days for the plants to stabilize and stand upright. Once they do, apply cow dung manure and till the soil thoroughly for better growth. Fertilization Schedule: By 15 September, plants should ideally grow up to neck height. Jai Singh uses 100-120 quintals of manure for every 1,000 plants. Selective Fertilization: Only underperforming plants (those below the standard neck height) receive fertilizers to optimize growth. By 15 October, plants that still don’t meet the standard height of 18-22 inches are fertilized again. By 15 April, plants should reach 63-69 inches for best results. Soil and Strengthening: Between 15 March and 5 May, soil is heaped around the plants to strengthen them. Fruiting starts between 25 May and 5 July, with 90% of plants producing top-quality bananas. Irrigation Schedule: March: 1-2 times April: 3-4 times May: 4-5 times June: Maintain soil moisture to keep it cool. (Pro tip: Always water after 3 PM during summer for best results.) Disease Prevention: Crop rotation is Jai Singh’s solution to avoid wilt disease and maintain soil health. Golden Rule for Success: "Sanitation is the thumb rule for any good plant," says Jai Singh. Clean practices ensure healthy plants and better yields. Jai Singh’s careful methods ensure fruiting by May-July, with harvesting starting around Janmashtami. His techniques are highly relevant for farmers in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal, where banana farming faces similar challenges.
