On November 14, 2021, the Azrieli Institute of Israel Studies hosted an online screening of the film, Yerusalem, The Incredible Story of Ethiopian Jewry. Following the film screening, in collaboration with Canadian Friends of Tel Aviv University, was a live discussion via Zoom on November 15, 2021 with the film's Director, Levi Zini, Dr. Anbessa Teferra (Tel Aviv University) and Yaffa Tegegne (B.C.L/LL.B, Montreal). The talk discussed both the history and the current state of the Ethiopian community in Israel. In addition, it explored questions regarding the memory of the community's immigration as well as the religious, economic, socio-cultural and political challenges of their integration into Israeli society. The discussion was moderated by the Institute Director, Dr. Csaba Nikolenyi. About the film In Ethiopia they were given the derogatory term “Falashas” (exiles). In the United States they were referred to as “Black Jews”. In Israel, they are Ethiopian Jews. They themselves would rather be called “Beta Israel” (House of Israel). Descendants of an ancient Jewish tribe, for over 2500 years they managed to uphold the laws of Judaism, all the while believing they were the last Jews on earth. The ties between Beta Israel and their fellow Jews were renewed only at the turn of the 20th century, thanks to the determination of a few individuals, and the exodus of Ethiopian Jews began. https://concordia.ca/azrieli
