Today, October 25, is the birthday of Luke Hoyer. He should be 21 but was killed in the February 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida. Luke was kind and loyal. He had a dry sense of humor, was dubbed “the king of one-word answers” by a classmate, loved chicken nuggets, sported a contagious smile, and enjoyed playing basketball and football. The Luke Hoyer Athletic Fund through www.voicesbroward.org funds sports activities for children in need. In the last year, almost 90 children in Broward County participated in sports made possible by generous donations made in Luke’s honor. Shortly after the Uvalde shooting, Luke’s parents were at the courthouse in Fort Lauderdale where jury selection was underway for their son’s killer. Luke’s dad described the physical pain he felt in the wake of the Uvalde shooting: “I know what those families had to endure sitting in a room waiting to hear that their child is laying in a school on a floor. It is heartbreaking, heartbreaking. I hope their journey through all of this is a lot faster than ours.” Four and a half years later, and his knees shook, and his voice broke as he spoke. In both cases, a teenage shooter had access to an AR-15 style rifle killing 17 in one and 21 in the other. Luke and 16 others died on February 14, 2018, because an unstable 18-year-old was able to purchase an AR-15. Raising the age limit for purchasing certain weapons and ensuring responsible firearms ownership would have made a difference. The killer attacked one year after purchasing his gun, killing 17 and wounding 17. Despite his callous attitude toward his victims, he was recently granted life in prison rather than the death penalty. #HonorWithAction #sensiblegunlaws #remembertheirnames
