In this portion of the class, we are reading, examining, and discussing portions of Boethius' work, The Consolation of Philosophy This video examines the status of what Boethius calls the "goods of fortune" -- those goods which he previously enjoyed, but now find himself deprived of -- wealth, property, reputation, fame, position, and power. While all of these are indeed good things, and do draw our human desire, none of them are the fundamental good for human beings, and all of them contain some inadequacies in their very nature. The course itself is intended to introduce students without a background in philosophy to some of the key texts, authors, perspectives, and concepts of the History of Ideas, with a particular focus upon human nature, culture and society, and the reality underlying and encompassing human beings and their experiences.
