Arthroscopic surgery is mainly performed for knee joint and shoulder joint and in some specific indications for the ankle as well as the hip joint. The recovery time depends upon the indication for knee arthroscopy. Suppose we do a knee arthroscopy just for a debridement or removal of a loose body or a meniscal tear during partial menisectomy the recovery is quicker. Generally the patient can walk from day 1 and by 10 days to two weeks there is complete recovery. Or if we do something like ligament reconstruction or anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction the recovery period is obviously longer. So the patient will have a knee brace for a couple of weeks and there will be a partial weight bearing till the graft incorporates into the bone and there will be a protocol of physiotherapy following the ligament reconstruction which will go long as six months. However patient can return to work in those conditions by two to three weeks time, just the office based work. There will be restriction in terms of sports. Similar things for shoulder arthroscopy also. The return to office based work will be within two to three weeks, however in cuff repair or any kind of shoulder stabilization like Bankart repair, the recovery is longer, generally takes about 3 to 6 months before any kinds of sports activity.
