0:00 - Intro 0:29 - FabFilter Pro-L 2, Modern/Transparent combo 1:18 - FabFilter Pro-L 2, Transparent preset 1:44 - Ozone 9 IRC 4 “Classic” 2:27 - Ozone 9 IRC 4 “Modern” 3:02 - Ozone 9 IRC 4 “Transient” 3:28 - Ozone 9 Character lever 3:47 - Conclusion 1) FabFilter Pro-L 2, Modern/Transparent combo. modern style will almost never distort. There must be more compression happening. the resulting final sound is NOT as open or wide-sounding. good for if you need to err on the safe side so that your track never has any distortion. good for if you’d like the center to be ever so subtly more punchy or pumpy. If you need a slightly less CPU intensive alternative, the Ozone 9 IRC 3 “Balanced” seems to be similar, from what I can tell. 2) FabFilter Pro-L 2, Transparent preset. greater risk for distortion, if pushed too hard. but more open and wide-sounding than if in Modern style. It’s a good preset to start with imo, and then if you end up hearing distortion, you could switch over to the Modern style. 3) Next is Ozone 9 IRC 4 “Classic” mode. **WINNER** My personal favorite, at least for the time being wide, open sound with a touch of indescribable coloring happening. You run some risk of distortion, if pushed too hard. If you need a slightly less CPU intensive alternative, IRC 3 “Clipping” seems to be similar, from what I can tell. 4) Ozone 9 IRC 4 “Modern” mode. wide, open sound with a touch of indescribable coloring happening, but LESS so than the Classic mode. In other words, a bit more clarity and detail. You run some risk of distortion, if pushed too hard. If you need a slightly less CPU intensive alternative, IRC 3 “Crisp” seems to be similar, from what I can tell. 5) Ozone 9 IRC 4 “Transient” mode. wide, open sound No coloring happening. Maintain full clarity and detail. You run some risk of distortion, if pushed too hard. In Ozone 9, for the Character lever, from what I can tell, at 0, the resulting sound will be as open as possible, but with greater risk of distortion. At 10, it will be more compressed/pumpy, with lower distortion. **WINNER** (at least for the time being, is): Ozone 9, IRC 4, Classic mode, Character starting at 0.00. I hope this has been helpful. If anyone has any input on the two limiters, I encourage you to post your observations in the comments. Timothy Charles Fehling Professional Mastering and Mixing Engineer https://www.TCFaudio.com/
