This song, which helped make Ghost in the Machine one of the Police's most successful albums, is apparently still incredibly popular, as quite a few of you requested for a remix version. Back in the days I wasn't entirely impressed with this song at first, probably because it was a departure from the Police's previous work, which I appreciated precisely because of the creative interplay between Sting's bass, Stewart's drums and Andy's guitar, with lots of left-over space and no other instruments. For 'ELTSDIM' Sting had delivered a splendid demo first, recorded in Canada, which they attempted to re-record in Montserrat. But they couldn't get any better takes, so they ended up playing over the demo. Unlike other Police tracks, however, the song was buried under multiple layers of piano, Minimoog synthesizer, and clavinet, played by Jean-Alain Roussel, and Caribbean steel drums were added in the chorus. Stewart Copeland is still audible, but Andy Summers is clearly much less visible. Summers was therefore less enthusiastic when Sting later had Roussel flown to Montserrat to assist with the re-recording. He stated that there 'wasn't enough room' for him and felt the song's arrangements weren't 'Police-style' enough. And while the final product certainly has its merits (ELTSDIM was a huge hit almost everywhere), I have to largely agree with Andy's initial thoughts. Therefore, I've tried to give Andy's guitar playing a more prominent place in this remix, adding a few quieter passages to the song, especially at the beginning and before the finale. And for all you Police-nutters out there: Stewart's (now) famous drumfill is also repeatedly included, as are snippets of Sting's vocals from the 1977 version, and a remixed passage of the unusual, rare outtake version of the song. The result is a remix with considerably more dynamism than the original. And just in case you wonder about the editing: no AI is used in doing this, all selection and editing is done old-school by hand like a giant jigsaw puzzle. So enjoy! I'm curious to know what you think of it, so please let me know. A big Merci goes to my friend Shakerman for inspiration for tackling certain passages in the mix. And last but not least, ultimately this is all for a greater purpose. If our protagonist(s) ever listen to this: come on guys, especially Sting, the years are seriously starting to count, so surprise the world, break the myth of The Police as a closed legend, visit your old friends, conquer the demons of the past, and do what many people worldwide don't expect, but are really waiting for: rearrange a few of each other's (solo) songs, give each other some space and ready it is: THAT DAMN SIXTH POLICE ALBUM!
