It was short-coated, and its coat came in a variety of colors. The body was low and barrel-shaped with a destined belly and short legs. The head was large and flat due to the lack of chewing from its vegetarian diet. The Hawaiian Poi Dog was said to be quite affectionate. In particular, the breed was very fond of children with whom it was often raised.  The dog was known to be very playful; although it was often too slow moving to catch what was thrown to it.  The breed regularly was found in the vicinity of the village’s pigs, with which it formed close bonds.  Many have described the breed as being more like a pig than a dog in terms of temperament.  SHORT SALISH WOOL DOG DESCRIPTION: The Salish Wool dog was one of only two dog breeds who were native to the United States. They greatly resembled the Spitz with their long white hair. The breed was developed and bred by the natives who once occupied the area now known as British Columbia and Washington State. They are believed to be the only native dog actually developed through a true breeding process. The arrival of Europeans in North America was the beginning of the end for the Salish Wool Dog. Increased access to sheep, Hudson bay blankets and the destruction of the Native American population itself due to disease and conflict lead to a disruption of traditional cultivation methods. The Salish Wool Dog began to interbreed with other varieties of dog and lose the traits that made it so distinct. By the mid-19th century the Salish Wool Dog was understood as extinct as a separate breed. In 1940 the last known descendent of the Wool dogs passed away. SHORT HARE INDIAN DOG DESCRIPTION: The Hare Indian Dog had a slender, thin muzzle and a small head. Their ears would stick straight up and were said to be thick skinned. They had a bushy tail that sometimes curled on their hips, thinner legs and hairy wide, webbed feet. They had long, thick coats in order to survive in the freezing temperatures and black eye lashes, nose, mouth, and gums. White coats with tan or fawn markings on their back and various other places was the standard for this breed.
