Mathematicians killed infinity, and it was the result of a niche philosophical mathematics known as finitism. If you’ve made it into or past middle school mathematics, you probably understand the undoubted importance of infinity. It seeps into all fields of higher mathematics and even lurks in seemingly innocent continuous geometry or natural numbers. Yet, infinity is realistically impractical when viewed on the scale of the universe. If there are finite fundamental particles and resources available, should mathematics ever touch infinity? Well a group of mathematicians called ‘finitists’ claim no, and they set out to employ a new system of mathematics, defying the existence of all objects defined by infinity. But how did they manage to do this? Does it have any use? And what about obvious infinities like digits of pi or number of numbers? In this video, we will explain the incredible albeit non-mainstream philosophy that is finitism. ___________________________________________________________________________ Music and SFX: https://pixabay.com/sound-effects/ Clarence Reed - An Amenable Introduction • An Amenable Introduction Lennon Hutton - Open Road • Open Road Everet Almond - A Brand New Day • A Brand New Day JX - Mega Man 2 Medley - Super Smash Bros for Wii U [8-Bit, 2A03] • Mega Man 2 Medley - Super Smash Bros for W...
