With 500 dairy cows, the farm relies on efficient feed production and optimised milk production. The Kaper family has been involved in energy production for years. Photovoltaic systems were installed on the roofs of the farm buildings early on. In 2015, a biogas plant was built that recycles the slurry and manure from the animals. Due to its success, a second plant was built. As a pioneering project, the farm is now planning to build a ground-mounted photovoltaic system on rewetted moorland – a first in Lower Saxony. The challenge here lies in anchoring the system to soft ground and in the targeted regulation of the water level to prevent CO₂ emissions caused by moorland drainage. The carbon footprint assessment, supported by the Grassland Centre, showed the carbon footprint of milk production. The results motivate the farm to implement further measures to improve feed efficiency and energy supply. In addition to ecological advantages, the Kaper family also hopes to achieve economic synergies. They see the carbon footprint assessment as a central starting point for actively shaping the discussion about sustainability and for making the farm future-proof. Participants at the Climate Farm Demo event were impressed by the approaches presented. One participant emphasised the importance of Climate Farm Demo in passing on the experiences gained to future farmers.
