(15 Mar 1998) English/Nat Russia's Irish community held a St Patrick's Day parade in Moscow on Sunday - two days before the real thing. Despite the snow and freezing temperatures, thousands turned out to see a colourful parade of floats, displays and pageantry in a city where one would perhaps least expect it. The parade in Moscow is usually held on the weekend before the real St Patrick's Day. It is sponsored by Irish and Irish/Russian businesses in Moscow. Thousands of spectators turned out to see how the Irish revel on their most happiest of holidays where the Guiness flows freely and the traditional music reminds Irishmen of home. The parade was held on Moscow's central Arbat street with traffic closed off for most of the day in preparation. The city's Irish residents and their supporters will head on to some Irish-style pubs and continue their celebration late into the day. SOUNDBITE: (English) "This day is getting better and better every single year, I cant believe it really, I mean look at the people on the street that enjoy this, look at the amount of people that participate." SUPER CAPTION: Robert Kelly, Irishman living in Moscow. The celebration also has a serious side. SOUNDBITE: (English) "There are so many Irish people working here, so many successful Irish/Russian businesses that this is a way that we can say 'thank you' to the people of Russia and particularly to Moscow for the cooperation between our two countries." SUPER CAPTION: Tony Prachter, Irishman living in Moscow After the day's celebrations, the city's Irish residents and their supporters went on to some Irish-style pubs to continue their celebrations.
